SPECIAL EVENTS & WORKSHOPS

Friday, September 24th, 2010Monthly Workshop in Yoga & Writing
@ Quiet Mind in Washington, DC, 8-10 pm
Here's the proposition: what if all of the experiences, emotions, images and stories you’ve lived (and in some cases, totally forgotten about) were secretly stored not just in the recesses of gray matter, but within all of your tissues, organs and even your skeletal structure?  Could your habitual way of physical and psychological posturing be shifted by excavating your own depths?  Join us for a highly experiential and ecologically friendly attempt at deep drilling.  Expect periods of yoga practice interspersed with brief readings and writing prompts.  (No, you will not be forced to share what you write. This is fun on a Friday night, not fifth grade.) Please dress accordingly, and bring your favorite notebook, pen, an open attitude, and a mat if you have one (rentals available).  Neophytes and seasoned practitioners of both yoga and writing are most welcome.

Saturday, October 2nd,  Rise & Shine with a Yogic Sheen Quiet Mind
Can you imagine having a daily ritual that gears you up to be at your best, dissolves accumulated stress and toxins, and blisses you out – all before your morning commute?  Come and learn how to practice a powerful recharger of mind and body called Abhyanga, a full body oil massage that increases circulation, tones muscles, enhances the complexion, calms the nerves, lubricates the joints, increases stamina and helps you sleep sounder at night.  In this workshop, Donald Norwood and Yael Flusberg will lead you through a simple routine of self-care that includes dry-brushing, self-massage, breath work and movement.  Bring a tank top and shorts you don’t mind getting oily, an old towel, a yoga mat and a playful spirit.  The cost of the workshop includes a dry brush, massage oil, and resource materials that will help you take this beautiful and simple practice back home or on the road.   Feel free to contact us with any questions before the workshop.

Anatomy for Every Body: An educational series that goes beyond the yoga workout and into the inner workings of your body. With Yael Flusberg and Daniel E. Hickman.  By donation. All @ Quiet Mind

(1) What Makes You Move?  An introduction to the Musculoskeletal System (Sunday, September 26th, 1:30-3:30 pm)  The first of a three-part series, this immersion offers yoga practitioners and others a framework for developing insights into the architecture of their own bodies. We will look at the basic building blocks of the bones, the "pulleys" and "pistons" of the muscles, and the tissue that connects it all -- tendons, ligaments, cartilage and fascia. You will walk away with a basic foundation of the physical vessel and its correlation to the deeper layers of the self.

(2) The Organic Self:  The Major Organ Systems (Sunday, October 31st,
1:30-3:30 pm)  The second of a three-part series, this immersion will help you understand what allows you to breathe, circulate blood, create hormones that chill or stress you out, savor and digest food, take in and filter information, and many other functions. We'll explore the components of these major systems that are essential to our well-being.  Since yoga profoundly affects these organs and their functions, knowing about them will enable you to customize your practice and enhance your health.

(3)  That's Shocking!  The Electrical Field of the Body (Sunday, November 14th,
1:30-3:30 pm)  The last of a three-part series, in this immersion you’ll learn about the currents, charges and conduits that circulate electromagnetic energy in and around your body.  We'll look into the source of this energy (Prana), the ways that it can be cultivated and distributed plus how it has been mapped by various mystical traditions. Yogasana (posture), pranayama (breathwork), and dhyana (meditation) all are tools for experiencing and enhancing your electrical field, and you will gain a greater understanding of how yoga can fine tune this integral part of your being.
